No, we're not moving
No, we’re not moving. Many have asked, in reference to yesterday’s NYC mayoral election, but don’t be silly. We’re staying put.
When we relocated to New York last year, we burned the boats: sold our Atlanta home and bought our residence here. Several friends cautioned me on the math of buying vs. renting in general, and this morning, our property purchase looks much riskier than it did a few months ago.
But the whole purpose of coming here and investing was to commit—to make wherever we lived our home, for as long as we are here, which is at least until the kids get out of high school. We went “all in” as a family, and this is what “all in” looks like.
I’m disappointed and worried about the direction he will lead the city, but credit Zohran for running a wildly effective campaign. Like Trump, he activated a base in a way no one saw coming, and he reaped the rewards.
And as in November 2024, we saw in this race that it isn’t enough to be against a candidate. You have to sell a vision that is more compelling than that of your competitor, no matter how delusional that platform may be. Until yesterday, I didn’t see a Cuomo volunteer on the streets once during this campaign. And since I didn’t volunteer myself, who am I gonna blame? (Oh right - Curtis Sliwa. F- that guy.)
It isn’t enough to be against a candidate. You have to sell a vision that is more compelling than that of your competitor, no matter how delusional that platform may be.
As I wrote the week before the last Presidential election, none of us knows what’s going to happen. We’ll just have to see what the new mayor can actually do and have faith that the city and the country are stronger than any individual politician. The United States will outlive the Trump stress test, and NYC will survive this guy.
Most importantly, today’s a good day to remember how lucky we are to live in a representative democracy where we are free to disagree with each other and our leaders. Plus, the bagels here are so good.
Have a great day!

As long as we’re putting things in perspective, please listen to my interview with Thad Reichley, who is battling stage 4 metastatic melanoma for which there is no known cure.
In November 2023, Thad—a father, husband, educator, and pro-level endurance athlete—went to the doctor because he had the flu. It turned out, he also had three dozen tumors in the lining of his lungs.
I wanted to speak with Thad (whose amazing wife, Leigh, was my Facebook colleague) because I think we can all learn from someone whose mortality is front and center every day, if only to remind ourselves of the importance of our health and those we love.
